One of the things we’ve constantly been amazed by over the past few years is not just the quality of photographs that are submitted every single day to Unsplash, but also seeing what people do when given freedom to do whatever they want with those photos.
We’ve seen Unsplash photos used for everything from ads and presentations by companies like Apple, Google, and Facebook, to billboards, blog posts, and even album covers by major recording artists.
Not to mention the original art pieces, photo remixes, and custom typography using Unsplash photos.
We wanted to celebrate this spirit of collaboration in the Unsplash Book. So we reached out to some of our favorite artists and asked them to create an original art piece using an Unsplash photo.
On Friday night we hit 100% of our $75k funding goal, which means it’s official. The Unsplash Book is being made!
Thank you so much to every single one of you who has made a pledge to the campaign, helped spread the word, or even just been a part of the creation of this project. We wouldn’t be here without you.
But there’s still a week and a half left in the campaign and the more we can raise, the more we can pay out to the amazing contributors who have given up their work for Unsplash and for the book.
In the past 7 days, more than 700 people have pledged over $54,000 towards the Unsplash Book Kickstarter campaign.
It’s been amazing to see what has happened already and we can’t thank you enough for all of your support and contribution in not only helping fund this book, but in shaping its design and content.
That’s why we’ve decided to open up one spot in the book for essay submissions from our community.
Today’s a huge day for us and all of you who have been involved in the process of making the Unsplash Book.
Over the past few months we’ve asked you to help us pick photos for every chapter of the book, find original artwork made from Unsplash photos, and even suggest titles and cover designs. And as we continue to create the book,we’ll continue to include you in every step of the way.
For everything you’ve done and continue to do to help us make the best book possible, thank you.
A few short hours ago we hit the launch button on the book’s Kickstarter Campaign and now it’s up to all of us to make this book become a reality!
We’ve set our funding goal at $75k USD, which, when funded, will mean $68 for every single contributor in the book.
And while we’ve had a guiding hand in each of these decisions, we felt that to make this a truly open source book, we needed to leave a portion of the pages entirely open to the people in the Unsplash community.
That’s why we’ve partnered with the team at Over—an awesome app that lets you create custom designs on your smartphone—to allow every single person in the Unsplash community the chance to have their work featured in the Unsplash Book.
